SANDAG Rep Talks Fostering Change Within Communities

By Vir Sinha |

The UCR School of Public Policy is hosting Samuel Roberts, SPP alumnus and current Public Communications Officer for San Diego’s Association of Governments (SANDAG), for a seminar on his career surrounding health, environmental policy, and community building.

Roberts began work for SANDAG after receiving his bachelor’s degree in public policy from UCR and his master’s from USC.  He is also the co-founder of San Bernardino for Rapid Recovery, an organization centered around COVID recovery through the provision of at-home education and vaccinations for individuals in the Inland Empire.

Roberts said, “In my seminar, I’ll cover how my passions for environmental, health, and transportation policy have led me to get involved locally through a communications lens. Much of my career has revolved around communications, outreach, and advocacy. I want to highlight the importance of these methods of engagement and how my work seeks to enhance equity and inclusion in the communities I belong to.”

Additionally, he said about his hopes for UCR students, “My hope is that I can inspire UCR students to get more involved in their communities and to understand how effective communication plays an important role in the policymaking process. I am hopeful that when students see what I have accomplished, they will be inspired to pursue initiatives in Riverside or their hometowns that they are passionate about.”

The event took place on Monday, March 4th at 3:30-5:00 p.m. Pacific Time at the UCR Alumni and Visitors Center.
