Riverside’s First Latina City Councilwoman to Speak at UCR

By Maya Prasad |

On Monday, March 9, 2020 the School of Public Policy will be hosting Councilwoman Gaby Plascencia who will be talking about her experience as the first Latina City Councilwoman.

The event will be held at the University of California, Riverside in CHASS Interdisciplinary South 1113 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.

Councilwoman Gaby Plascencia is an education champion who has been an active member of the Riverside community for more than two decades. A product of Riverside’s public schools and a resident of the City of Riverside for more than 30 years. Gaby has been committed to giving back to her community throughout her adult life. As a School Counselor, she has personally mentored our youth, helping connect students with college and career pathways to prepare them for a successful future in our community. Gaby presently serves as a School Counselor with Loma Vista Middle School. As the first Latina elected to the Riverside City Council, Gaby understands the importance of representation at every level of government, particularly at the local level where so many decisions that impact communities of color are made.

“It is important to learn from inspiring women who have decided to challenge the status quo and add more representation in our local governments,” said Arleth Flores Aparicio, a second-year public policy student.

The event is open to all UCR students. Those interested can register via https://spp-plascencia.eventbrite.com. For more information about the panel, contact markma@ucr.edu.
