Suleyma Vergara-Tapia (MPP 2019)

The Graduate Center at the City University of New York, Sociology Ph.D. Program

Why did you choose UCR’s MPP program?

I learned about the MPP program through a professor during my fourth year who referred me to faculty in the program working in my field of interest. I chose UCR’s MPP program because of the opportunities for professional growth given my political science and economics background and interest in public policy.

What did you enjoy about your time in the program?

I enjoyed the opportunity to work on projects affecting the Inland Empire as well as the opportunities to teach. Through the SPP, a colleague and I were able to connect with a community organization to complete our capstone research project. Additionally, I TA’d and got to teach some classes after graduation, which helped me solidify my career goals. Together these experiences gave me the teaching and research experience I was looking for in a program.

What made you decide to pursue a Ph.D.?

I had been interested in the possibility of pursuing a Ph.D. since undergrad, but after completing my MPP, teaching some classes, and working as a Research Assistant at another institution, I felt surer about pursuing a career in academia. The guidance and support I received from the faculty were instrumental in helping me reach my goals.

Any advice for students applying to and/or currently enrolled in our program?

My advice to students would be that the MPP program offers a lot of opportunities for professional development, whether you are interested in academia or not. Speaking to staff and faculty about your interests is very important. The program is full of people who want the best for you and getting to know everyone in the SPP and having them know you and your interest can lead to opportunities you wouldn’t be aware of otherwise.
