Undergraduate Public Policy Internship Requirements

Every undergraduate public policy student is required to complete a policy-oriented internship during an academic quarter before they graduate. Students must work at minimum 8 hours/week for 10 weeks (or 80 hours total) in order for the internship to qualify for academic credit.

There are three ways in which undergraduate students can fulfill this requirement:

  1. Find and obtain an internship independently
  2. Complete an internship as a participant in the SPP Undergraduate Internship Program
  3. Complete an internship as a participant in either the UCDC or UC Sacramento Program

Regardless of which internship option the student pursues, all students MUST enroll in a section of PBPL 198i “Independent Internship in Public Policy” during the quarter in which they are interning in order to obtain academic credit for their internship.

  • Students who are unfamiliar with the internship search and application process should first explore the internship resources provided through the UCR Career Center and/or meet with a UCR Career Center counselor to develop an internship search strategy and ensure their resumes are in good condition.
  • Students who are having trouble locating policy-specific internships or who are not sure which internship option makes the most sense for them should make an appointment with Bri Riggio, the SPP Career Counselor and Internship Program Coordinator.
  • Students who are interested in learning more about the SPP Undergraduate Internship Program or about UCDC or the UC Sacramento Programs can either make an appointment with Bri Riggio, the SPP Career Counselor and Internship Program Coordinator or email their questions to spp-internship@ucr.edu.
